THE UMBWE EXPERIENCE

A Direct Line into the Wild Mountain

Umbwe is one of the shortest and steepest approaches to the Southern Glaciers and the Southern Circuit of Kilimanjaro.

The route is quiet and scenic, but its rapid gain in elevation offers less time for acclimatization. After Barranco Camp, Umbwe joins the Southern Circuit before the summit push from Barafu and the descent through Mweka.

Umbwe rewards preparation, stamina and respect for altitude. It is best chosen by trekkers who understand that a shorter route is not an easier route.
