Quiet Northern Trail
Begin near the Kenya border on a less-travelled approach with a more remote feel than the southern routes.

KILIMANJARO • TANZANIA
Approach Kilimanjaro from the quiet northern side near the Kenya border, reach Uhuru Peak and descend through the Marangu Route.
THE RONGAI EXPERIENCE
Rongai is the only established Kilimanjaro route that approaches from the north, beginning near the Kenya border and climbing through open, remote landscapes.
The drier northern slopes offer a different perspective on the mountain. The trail passes Simba and Kikelewa camps toward Mawenzi Tarn, crosses the high saddle to Kibo Hut and joins the summit approach before descending on the Marangu side.
Rongai's quieter approach is distinctive, but six days leave limited time for acclimatization. Keep a measured pace, follow your guide's advice and take altitude symptoms seriously.
VIEW 6-DAY ITINERARY →From Rongai Gate near the Kenya border, the trail climbs via Simba Camp, Kikelewa and Mawenzi Tarn to Kibo Hut. After the summit, descend to Horombo Hut and continue out through Marangu Gate.

PREPARE FOR THE MOUNTAIN
Prepare for cool nights, exposed high-altitude terrain and changing weather on the northern trail.
Pack moisture-wicking base layers, warm mid-layers and a waterproof outer shell.
Bring broken-in hiking boots, trekking socks and comfortable camp shoes.
Use insulated gloves, a warm hat, thermal layers and a sleeping bag suited to below-freezing nights.
Carry water, snacks, rain protection, sunglasses, sunscreen and personal medication.
Trekking poles and a headlamp with spare batteries are valuable for uneven trails and summit night.
Keep your passport, travel insurance details and required personal documents accessible.
The northern approach can be dry, but weather changes quickly at altitude. Carry rain protection and drink regularly throughout the trek.
